Australian visitor arrivals in Da Nang increased by nearly 44% in the first nine months of 2026. Western Sydney International Airport has officially commenced commercial operations. At the same time, Da Nang’s city leaders are actively promoting air connectivity, technological cooperation and investment opportunities in Australia. Together, these developments are opening up new prospects for economic ties between the two markets.
Da Nang actively promotes direct air connectivity with Australia
On November 3, 2026, a delegation from Da Nang City, led by Deputy Secretary of the Municipal Party Committee Ngo Xuan Thang and accompanied by Vice Chairman of the Municipal People’s Committee Ho Quang Buu, met with the leadership of Western Sydney International Airport (WSI) to discuss the possibility of establishing a direct Da Nang–Western Sydney flight route.

This is a noteworthy step in the city’s strategy to expand its international aviation network.
Western Sydney International is Australia’s newest international airport and officially commenced commercial passenger operations on October 25, 2026. Its initial designed capacity is approximately 10 million passengers per year. Operating 24 hours a day, seven days a week, the airport is being developed as a new aviation gateway for Greater Western Sydney.
Meanwhile, Da Nang International Airport handled more than 15.29 million passengers in 2025, with plans to increase its capacity to 20 million passengers annually by 2030. Its International Terminal 2 has also received a 5-Star Skytrax rating for three consecutive years, from 2024 to 2026.
The development of these two aviation hubs provides a favourable foundation for exploring direct connectivity between Central Vietnam and New South Wales.
Da Nang offers a wide range of tourism advantages.
A rapidly growing Australian market: A strong case for a new air route
One of the most encouraging indicators is the growth of the Australian visitor market.
In the first nine months of 2026, Da Nang welcomed 376,981 Australian visitors, representing an increase of 43.86% compared with the same period in 2025. Meanwhile, two-way passenger traffic between New South Wales and Vietnam exceeded 500,000 in 2025.
These figures highlight the significant potential for stronger connectivity between the two markets.

Da Nang and Central Vietnam offer a compelling combination of beachfront resorts, golf courses, cuisine and renowned cultural heritage destinations, including Hoi An, My Son Sanctuary and Hue. These experiences align well with the interests of various Australian traveller segments, from families seeking beach holidays and long-stay visitors to golf enthusiasts and cultural explorers.
During its promotional visit to Australia from October 24 to 31, 2026, Da Nang’s tourism sector organised a destination promotion and business networking programme in Sydney. The event brought together the Consulate General of Vietnam in Sydney and more than 30 Australian travel companies, tourism organisations and industry partners.
The city also held meetings with Destination NSW, Western Sydney International Airport and the Western Sydney Tourism Taskforce to explore opportunities for joint promotion and the development of two-way visitor flows.
Technology and investment cooperation: Beyond air connectivity
Notably, the latest promotional activities were not limited to tourism.
At the University of Sydney, the delegation discussed potential cooperation with researchers in long-range Wi-Fi technology, smart sensors and artificial intelligence. These technologies could be explored for applications in tourism management, forest protection in Son Tra Peninsula, search and rescue operations, and disaster response.
At Macquarie University, Da Nang continued to explore research and development opportunities in unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) technology, with a view to potentially establishing R&D, testing and manufacturing facilities at Da Nang Hi-Tech Park.
Of particular interest, an aerial UAV battery-swapping technology project developed by Macquarie University's Advanced Drone Systems Research Centre received AUD 2.24 million in funding from Australia's Economic Accelerator, with DroneX participating in the commercialisation initiative.
These activities demonstrate that Da Nang is engaging with Australia across multiple areas, including aviation, tourism, education, scientific research and high-tech investment.
Da Nang real estate: Potential benefits from improved connectivity and a broader demand base
For the real estate market, stronger international air connectivity could generate positive effects by expanding visitor markets, increasing business activity and attracting additional investment.
If the Da Nang–Western Sydney route is eventually launched and operates sustainably, the city could gain better access to Australian tourists, the Vietnamese community in Australia, business travellers and long-stay visitors.
Da Nang is renowned for its annual International Fireworks Festival, held for nearly two decades.
Potential beneficiaries include hotels, serviced apartments, resort real estate and high-quality residential properties catering to international professionals and investors.
For the resort real estate sector in particular, diversifying visitor markets is important to strengthening the long-term potential for property operations and rental income. Assets with prime beachfront locations, high construction standards, integrated services and professional hospitality management brands may be better positioned to attract a broader international customer base.
However, these opportunities should be viewed from a medium- to long-term perspective rather than as a guarantee of property price appreciation. Real estate value must still be assessed based on legal status, purchase price, asset quality and actual operating performance.
A positive signal for Da Nang’s international positioning
The Da Nang–Western Sydney route remains at the research and assessment stage, with discussions focused on demand analysis and coordination with airlines. No official operating schedule has been announced.
Nevertheless, the combination of strong growth in Australian visitor arrivals, the opening of a new international airport in Western Sydney and city-level cooperation initiatives provides a positive foundation for future engagement between the two markets.

For Da Nang, the opportunity extends beyond welcoming more Australian visitors. It also lies in expanding trade and business networks, attracting investment and strengthening the city’s position as an international destination for tourism, resort living and the service economy.
These developments are worth monitoring closely in the years ahead—not only for tourism businesses and investors, but also for those following the evolution of Da Nang’s real estate market.
